An exceptional and imposing mid Victorian Scottish flame mahogany chest of drawers, dating to circa 1860-1880. This piece is a beautiful example of high quality 19th century regional craftsmanship, boasting grand proportions and superb architectural details.
The chest features a classic Victorian configuration, consisting of a discreet, full width "secret" cushion drawer concealed within the top frieze, positioned above two short drawers and three deep, graduating long drawers. The lower drawer fronts are faced with beautifully figured, book matched flame mahogany veneers that display a rich, golden brown patina and striking natural grain patterns. The standard drawers are fitted with their original turned wooden knobs.
A defining feature of Scottish cabinetry from this era, the carcass is flanked by substantial, hand carved scroll corbels (brackets) at the top and delicate carved leaf motifs anchoring the base plinth.
